GPS stands for Global Positioning System. It is a satellite-based navigation system that provides location and time information in all weather conditions, anywhere on or near the Earth where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites.

The space segment consists of 24 operational satellites and 3 spares that orbit the Earth at an altitude of 20,200 kilometers (12,552 miles). The satellites are arranged in six orbital planes, with four satellites in each plane.
